The 11th Annual Nolafunk Mardi Gras Ball & Tour featuring Voodoo Dead continued on Thursday night with a sold out show at The Hamilton in Washington, D.C. Voodoo Dead ’17 features guitarist Steve Kimock along with bassist Oteil Burbridge, drummer Wally Ingram, keyboardist Jeff Chimenti and multi-instrumentalist Jackie Greene plus special guest guitarist/vocalist Papa Mali. The band switched up the setlist completely from Wednesday’s tour opener and audio of Thursday’s concert at The Hamilton has surfaced.

Kimock began the evening with an introduction ahead of a cover of Earnest Ranglin’s “Nana’s Chalk Pipe.” The band then tore through “Mr. Charlie” and delivered a pretty “Gomorrah” complete with a funny story from Kimock about getting a phone call from Donna Jean Godchaux for the first time. Greene then stepped into the spotlight to lead “Sugaree” before the group worked The Congos’ “Congo Man Chant” into “Get Up, Stand Up” by Bob Marley. Thursday’s first set came to a close with a Jackie-sung version of “Gotta Serve Somebody” by Bob Dylan.

Voodoo Dead started the second set with “Help On The Way” > “Slipknot!,” but instead of finishing the familiar sequence with “Franklin’s Tower” they swerved into The Meters’ “Hey Pocky Way.” A particularly upbeat “Scarlet Begonias” came next and led into “Tennessee Jed.” The band finished the second set with “Loose Lucy” and then returned for a “Deal” encore. Next up for Voodoo Dead is a performance at Irving Plaza in New York City on Friday night.
