The 11th Annual Nolafunk Mardi Gras Ball & Tour featuring Voodoo Dead began last night at The Hamilton in Washington, D.C. Guitarist Steve Kimock along with bassist Oteil Burbridge, drummer Wally Ingram, keyboardist Jeff Chimenti and multi-instrumentalist Jackie Greene are the core band and they were joined by guitarist/vocalist Papa Mali for a portion of their set. An audience recording and high-quality video has surfaced and can be watched/streamed below.
Kimock stepped to the mic to introduce the show ahead of leading “Philadelphia Mambo.” Jackie Greene then fronted the group on “Big Railroad Blues” and “Bertha.” The latter featured Papa Mali as Greene moved over to help Chimenti on keys. Voodoo Dead ended the first set of the tour with a “That’s What Love Will Make You Do” > “Cassidy” > “New Speedway Boogie” > “I Know You Rider” sequence. The evening concluded with an encore of Bob Dylan and The Band’s “I Shall Be Released.” Next up for Voodoo Dead is another night at The Hamilton on Thursday.
