Full Show Audio: Umphrey’s McGee Welcomes Nicole Atkins At First Of 2 In Philadelphia

On Friday night, Umphrey’s McGee pulled into the City of Brotherly Love for a two-night stand at The Fillmore Philadelphia. The sold-out show saw the Chicago-band band bust out a pair of mash-ups and invite opening act Nicole Atkins to join them for the debut more straight-foward cover.
The night got underway with the one-two punch of “Miami Virtue” > “Half Delayed.” Next Umphrey’s dropped into their first “Der Bluten Kat” of 2018. The sextet then offered up their first surprise of the night as they dusted off a mash-up of “Peter Gunn/Every Breath You Take” in the middle of the old-school jam-vehicle. UM’s pairing of the Henry Mancini-composed theme song for the 1959 television show and The Police’s 1983 number one hit from Synchronicity saw action for the first time since February of 2013, a span of nearly five years. The band initially covered the mash-up shortly after it appeared in the Season 3 premiere of HBO’s The Sopranos.
Two songs later Umph welcomed out singer Nicole Atkins, who served as the night’s opening act, to the stage. The New Jersey-native, who has a foot in the jam scene having performed a handful of times with Joe Russo’s Almost Dead, fronted the band on their first ever take on The Pretenders’ “Brass In Pocket” from the band’s 1979 debut album.
The second frame of the night got underway with setlist staple “Plunger” as they stretched The Anchor Drops tune out well past the 15-minute mark as it segued into the semi-rarity “Den.” The six-song set rolled on with “Make It Right,” with guitarist Jake Cinninger moving over keyboards for “FF” as it wound its way into “Rocker Part 2.” Umphrey’s closed out things out with a lengthy take on “Ocean Billy” that saw them work in teases of Rush’s “YYZ” and “Senor Mouse” by jazz-fusion guitarist Al Di Meola. UM brought their night to an end with their second mash-up of the night: “Frankie Zombie.” The Zonkey track, which was first debuted in 2012, fuses “Thunder Kiss ’65” by White Zombie with “Relax” by Frankie Goes To Hollywood and “Have a Cigar” by Pink Floyd and was played for the first time since June of last year and for just the eleventh time ever.
