Full Show Audio: Twiddle Jams With Giant Country Horns On New Year’s Eve In Albany

By Scott Bernstein Jan 3, 2018 7:56 am PST

Vermont jam quartet Twiddle completed a year in which they put out a double-album and built their audience by leaps and bounds with a three-set New Year’s Eve concert at The Palace Theatre in Albany, New York. Twiddle was joined by The Giant Country Horns for the entire second set of the marathon affair. Full show audio of the show can be streamed below.

Mihali Savoulidis & Co. kicked off the festivities with “Subconscious Prelude” and then played the recently-debuted “Drifter” and classic “Bronze Fingers.” The show rolled on with “The FRENDS Theme” and “Wildfire” ahead of a set-closing sequence of “Dr. Remidi’s Melodium” into a cover of Primus’ “Too Many Puppies” back into “Dr. Remidi’s.”

Twiddle emerged for the second set joined by Russ Remington, Dave “The Truth” Grippo and Carl “Gears” Gerhard, a.k.a. The Giant Country Horns. Russ, Dave and Carl had joined Twiddle twice earlier in 2017 after reuniting a few months earlier for the first time since a famed July 1991 run with Phish. The now seven-piece opened with “Enter” > “Orlando’s” and then presented one beloved fan favorite after another including “Brick Of Barley,” “Beehop” and “Beethoven & Greene.”

For the third set, Twiddle chose “Atlantic Mocean” to start, which as usual led into the quartet’s cover of “BBQ” by ALO. The band seems to love playing “BBQ” around midnight on New Year’s Eve as last year it was preceded by “Auld Lang Syne” and in 2017 it led into a Ryan “Norb” Dempsey prelude to a horn-driven “Auld Lang Syne.” Mihali, the guys and the horns jammed on the traditional New Year’s song for a while before taking “Grandpa Fox” deep. A “Hatti’s Jam” > “When It Rains, It Pours” combo without the horns closed out the third set. Twiddle then returned for a “Juggernaut” encore.
