Full Set Audio: Circles Around The Sun Makes Live Debut At Lockn’

One of the highlights of the recently completed Lockn’ Festival at Oak Ridge Farm in Arrington, Virginia was the first-ever live set from Circles Around The Sun. Hard Working Americans/Chris Robinson Brotherhood guitarist Neal Casal put the group together last summer to create instrumental music to be played at setbreak of the Fare Thee Well concerts in Santa Clara and Chicago. This past Friday night the quartet blew minds in the Woods of Lockn’ and a taper has done the world a huge favor by sharing a recording of what may be the group’s only live performance.
Casal is joined in Circles Around The Sun by CRB keyboardist Adam MacDougall, drummer Mark Levy and bassist Dan Horne. The foursome worked through extended versions of six songs from the Fare Thee Well intermissions, each of which were released on Interludes For The Dead last fall. Every tune played hints at a song by another artist, whether it’s “Space Wheel” sounding like the Grateful Dead’s “The Wheel” or “Ginger Says” taking some of the “Tweezer” vibe. While we’re sure hoping the quartet rises again, at least we’ll have Lockn’.
