Foo Fighters Jam With ‘Kiss Guy’ At North American Tour Opener In Austin

Back in October, a Foo Fighters fan and concert attendee named Pierce Edge convinced the band to let him play drums on a cover of Queen’s “Under Pressure” in Columbia, South Carolina. Pierce started a trend of the band welcoming audience members to jam with them that continued at Wednesday night’s North American tour opener at the Austin360 Amphitheater in Austin, Texas.

The Foo Fighters/audience member collaboration came towards the back end of last night’s show. Dave Grohl & Co. opened the evening with a career-spanning run of originals such as “Learn To Fly,” “The Pretender” and “My Hero.” Foo Fighters then presented a series of covers that included the lyrics of Van Halen’s “Jump” sung to the tune of John Lennon’s “Imagine” and drummer Luke Spiller of The Struts sitting-in on “Under Pressure.” Grohl proceeded to point out an audience member sporting the same makeup design on his face that Kiss bassist Gene Simmons wears.

Dave Grohl brought the fan up and handed over his guitar. Grohl asked the audience member for his name, but when the fan didn’t respond Dave continued to call him “Kiss Guy.” Foo Fighters went on to perform “Monkey Wrench” augmented by the concertgoer in the Kiss makeup, who thankfully was an impressive guitarist. “Kiss Guy” went on to “shred a fucking lead” successfully at Grohl’s urging. After “Monkey Wrench,” the Foo Fighters frontman gave their collaborator one more chance to tell the crowd his real name. This time he obliged, announcing his name was Yayo.

Wednesday’s tour opener continued with “Times Like These” and “Generator.” Next up was “Big Me” and “Best Of You” ahead of a show-closing run of “Dirty Water,” “This Is A Call” and “Everlong.” Foo Fighters now head to Cynthia Woods Mitchell Pavilion for a Thursday night concert in The Woodlands, Texas.
