Foo Fighters Open ‘Window’ For 1st Time At Surprise Irving Plaza Gig

Foo Fighters took the stage at the intimate New York City club Irving Plaza on Thursday for a concert announced just one day earlier. The surprise show saw the band premiere “Window” as part of their 25-song performance.

Frontman Dave Grohl and his bandmates recently released Your Favorite Toy, their 12th studio album and first to feature new drummer Ilan Rubin. After kicking off the U.S. portion of their Take Cover Tour on Tuesday at Webster Bank Arena in Bridgeport, Connecticut, Foo Fighters announced back-to-back pop up shows at Irving Plaza and at Starland Ballroom in Sayreville, New Jersey.

Tickets went on sale at each venue on Thursday, which drew huge lines of fans looking at attend the underplays. Foo Fighters like to choose Irving Plaza for their NYC pop-ups. The room also hosted the band on September 20, 2007 and December 5, 2014. For reference, the band has sold out massive venues Madison Square Garden and Citi Field in between dates at the 1,200-capacity Irving Plaza.

“Windows” was one of six Your Favorite Toy tracks to make the setlist at Irving Plaza. Others included “Spit Shine,” debuted in Bridgeport, “Caught In The Echo,” debuted on SNL UK, the title track, “Of All People” and “Unconditional.”

Foo Fighters rolled out “Windows” towards the middle of their main set in NYC. The song is based on a Breeders-esque riff and has a mellower feel than many Your Favorite Toy cuts. “Window,” Foo Fighters’ latest single, arrived just before Your Favorite Song came out.

Grohl and Co. opened the underplay with a cover of Late!’s “Winnebago.” Foo Fighters then worked through a career-spanning selection of material, including such classics as “Times Like These,” “My Hero,” “Learn To Fly,” “This Is A Call,” “Monkey Wrench” and “Best Of You.” While the show itself was a surprise, the choice of “Everlong” as the finale was not. But it was hard to find anybody complaining.
