Foo Fighters swung by the Ed Sullivan Theater to appear on the latest episode of The Late Show With Stephen Colbert. Frontman Dave Grohl spoke to host Stephen Colbert before teaming with the rest of the band to perform “Window” and “Caught In The Echo,” a pair of songs from their recently released Your Favorite Toy album.
Your Favorite Toy, Foo Fighters’ 12th album, arrived on April 24. The band co-produced the 10-track effort with Oliver Roman. Your Favorite Toy marks the group’s first album to feature new drummer Ilan Rubin.
Dave Grohl began his chat with Colbert by discussing the period after Kurt Cobain died. “When Nirvana ended I didn’t know what to do,” Grohl said. “I didn’t know if I wanted to continue playing music. It made me sad to think of playing in another band. Losing Nirvana, losing Kurt, was a really dark, emotional experience.”
Grohl took a trip to Ireland to get away from the realities of life. He was driving through the countryside when he came across a hitchhiker sporting a Kurt Cobain t-shirt. “To me, I thought, ‘Okay this is the universe telling me to continue,'” Grohl recalled. “I thought, ‘Okay, I need to keep going. I have so much reverence and respect for the past, but I need to have a future.’ And that’s kind of where it began.”
Dave Grohl formed Foo Fighters soon there after and brought the group to the Ed Sullivan Theater in 1995 for their television debut on The Late Show With David Letterman. The band was touring in a van at the time and Colbert asked Grohl if it’s more enjoyable now that he isn’t couch surfing. “Sure!” Grohl exclaimed before sharing the story of the time he told his mother he was going to leave school and tour the world. The vocalist/guitarist also discussed his daughter Violet Grohl's career, a Your Favorite Toy scavenger hunt and more.
Foo Fighters recently offered the live debut of “Window” during their underplay at NYC’s intimate Irving Plaza. The song was given its television premiere on Colbert to end the latest epiode. Grohl and his bandmates also performed fellow Your Favorite Toy cut “Caught In The Echo” as a web exclusive bonus.
