Exclusive Premiere: Phish Weaves ‘Kung’ Within ‘Stash’ On ‘St. Louis ’93’

Next Friday, March 31, Phish will unveil the group’s latest live archival release, St. Louis ’93, featuring official recordings of the quartet’s two 1993 stops at the American Theatre in St. Louis. Today, JamBase is pleased to premiere one of the many highlights from the 6-CD set.

The audio below comes from April 14, 1993, the first of the two 1993 Phish shows showcased on St. Louis ’93. In the middle of the first set the quartet launched into “Stash” and pretty quickly it became apparent this would be no ordinary version of the A Picture Of Nectar live staple. Phish was in an exploratory mode as they moved from one inventive jam space to the next.

The band had been on the road for over two months at this point and the foursome was incredibly tight. About 10 minutes in, guitarist Trey Anastasio stepped to the mic and began chanting “Kung” over a wild chord sequence. Drummer Jon Fishman got in on the action with yelps of his own as Anastasio teased “Dave’s Energy Guide.” While the quartet would go on to finish “Stash,” Anastasio and Fishman screamed the “Kung” lyrics, “From the hills!,” throughout the ending of the song.

Listen to the insane “Stash” > “Kung” > “Stash” from St. Louis ’93:

Just a few of the other highlights from the box set are another version of “Kung” within the intro of “The Horse” that came right after “Stash,” a “You Enjoy Myself” featuring a jam on “Spooky,” as well as an all-time “Reba” and the only “Mike’s Song” > “Faht” > “Weekapaug Groove” sequence in Phish history. Both the April 14 and August 16, 1993 Phish shows included on St. Louis ’93 are fantastic with wonderful moments around every turn.

St. Louis ’93 is currently available for pre-order via Dry Goods featuring instant downloads of “Possum” and “Maze.”
