Last week, the Washington Post detailed the story of Tyshika Britten, one of many parents who had a hard time providing for their family this holiday season. Britten went to Craigslist looking for help and explained that her family in Maryland was facing eviction, so she would be unable to provide presents for her children this Christmas. The plea went viral and many kind hearted souls responded including Pearl Jam frontman Eddie Vedder.
In the post’s follow-up story, we learn Britten’s children did have a Merry Christmas filled with gifts. One gift was a $10,000 check from Vedder. “I was just so moved by the story and what this mother did for her children,” Eddie told the Washington Post in an interview Sunday. “I thought those kids must be so proud of their mother for reaching out. That takes a lot of courage.”
The singer knows of having hard times during Christmas. “There were years there were toys from Santa, but they were used and they came from garage sales and they didn’t always work,” he said. His aim was to give the family what he described as “a tourniquet” as they move beyond the tough holiday season and Britten was extremely appreciative, though she did have to Google Eddie’s name to figure out his band.
