Dweezil Zappa Shares Trademark Battle Update & Will Not Participate In Frank Hologram Tour

Just days after the Zappa Family Trust (ZFT) announced a Frank Zappa hologram tour is in the works, guitarist Dweezil Zappa has shared a “big” and “huge” update about his legal battle with ZFT. Dweezil also confirmed he is “not interested in participating in anything with an artificial version of my Father on stage.”

The ZFT is run by Ahmet Zappa and Diva Zappa, two of late guitarist Frank Zappa’s four children, who took over operations of their father’s estate following the death of Frank’s wife Gail Zappa. Dweezil and Moon Zappa, Frank’s other two children, are stakeholders in ZFT with smaller shares than their siblings. The guitarist detailed the legal wranglings that led him to rename his band and tour multiple times last year. Dweezil also revealed he tried to settle with the ZFT to stop both sides from accumulating further legal bills.

Though a press release about the Frank Zappa hologram tour mentioned Dweezil, the guitarist said he learned about the tour the same way many fans did, via social media. “I have never been contacted by the (ZFT) about it in any form nor have I given them consent to use my name. For the record, I am not interested in participating in anything with an artificial version of my Father on stage. Let’s be realistic, it’s not actually Frank Zappa that will be on stage. It’s important to note that the process of creating holograms of deceased individuals (crazy that this is a thing nowadays) does not involve the physical attributes of said individuals,” reads portions of Dweezil’s note. Dweezil referred to the idea as “Fake Frank” and warned, “’Fake Frank’ could even be made to hold a Budweiser banner and do all sorts of other ‘Fake Frank’ things that are inconsistent with the real Frank Zappa. This is all sounds like a preposterous joke but sadly it’s true.”

Dweezil used a quote Ahmet gave to Rolling Stone in a 2016 in which Ahmet said Dweezil’s claims that the estate was attempting to stop him were “1 million percent false” multiple times throughout his trademark battle update. The guitarist shared numerous ways in which he feels the ZFT is indeed trying to stop him from playing under his own name. Dweezil cut and pasted a handful of excerpts from letters he has received from the ZFT and explained his side of the story.

The guitarist also announced the expansion of his “Others Of Intention” Pledge Music campaign which recently passed the 100% goal mark. Dweezil is now aiming for 200% due to the fees piling up from the ongoing legal battle. Ahmet and the ZFT have yet to respond to Dweezil’s letter.

Dweezil Zappa and his band kick off a European Tour early next month.
