Susan Tedeschi & Derek Trucks Light Up Jacksonville With Doobie Brothers

The Doobie Brothers‘ summer tour visited Susan Tedeschi and Derek Trucks‘ hometown of Jacksonville last night. The Tedeschi Trucks Band co-leaders each made extended guest appearances on Tuesday during the concert held at Daily’s Place Amphitheater.

The collaborations gave Derek Trucks a chance to reunite with his longtime Allman Brothers bandmate Marc Quinones, who plays percussion with The Doobie Brothers. Derek emerged early in the legendary group’s set along with fellow guitar hero Robert Cray of opening act the Robert Cray Band. Trucks and Cray contributed fretboard fireworks to a cover of Sonny Boy Williamson II’s “Don’t Start Me Talkin’.”

The blues standard turned into a guitar clinic with Derek Trucks, Robert Cray and The Doobie Brothers’ Tom Johnston, Patrick Simmons and John McFee each taking solos. Trucks played slide on “Don’t Start Me Talkin’,” which had been shelved by The Doobie Brothers since November 18, 2019 as per Setlist.FM.

Derek Trucks stuck around for the versions of originals “It Keeps You Runnin'” and “Eyes Of Silver” that followed. The Doobie Brothers featuring Michael McDonald then went on to finish their set sans guests with a run of classics including “Minute By Minute,” “What A Fool Believes,” “Long Train Runnin'” and “China Grove.”

The Doobie Brothers returned to the stage to launch their encore in Jacksonsville with “Black Water.” Susan Tedeschi then emerged to help sing the ensuing “Takin’ It To The Streets.” Tedeschi and her husband Derek Trucks went on to add to the evening’s “Listen To The Music” finale. Susan stuck to vocals while Derek let it rip on a pink Fender Stratocaster guitar.
