Thursday was a special evening for The Disco Biscuits bassist Marc Brownstein who shared the stage with his son during the band’s second of two concerts at Higher Ground. University of Vermont freshman Zach Brownstein played drums on “Vassillios” to open the second set last night at the Burlington, Vermont venue.

“Alright Burlington, there’s a lot of unbelievable musicians popping into Higher Ground here, some of my favorite that are out there,” a beaming Marc Brownstein said to begin his introduction at the start of Thursday’s second tDB set. “Please can you do me a favor and [give] a very special and warm Burlington welcome for my own son, Zachary Brownstein, who’s going to sit in and play this song with us,” the bassist added and exclaimed, “He’s ready for it!”

The youngster stood in for tDB drummer Allen Aucoin on one of the oldest songs in the quartet’s repertoire. Zach Brownstein drummed in the pocket throughout the 14-minute “Vassillios” expertly varying tempos along with guitarist Jon Gutwillig, keyboardist Aron Magner and his dad. The musicians explored multiple soundscapes before Gutwillig uncorked a furious solo towards the end of the tune. Zach left the stage following the set-opening number to appreciative roars from the crowd.

Zach Brownstein’s guest spot wasn’t the only collaboration that took place at Higher Ground last night. Karina Rykman‘s band opened the concert and Magner joined the trio for the bulk of their set one night after Rykman sat in with the Disco Biscuits at the same venue. Additionally, Dopapod keyboardist Eli Winderman was Bisco’s special guest on the “Twisted In The Road” that followed “Vassillios.” Winderman shared Magner’s rig for the 20-minute jam.

The Disco Biscuits bring their winter tour to Albany, New York’s Palace Theatre tonight with Snakes and Stars (Michael Travis & Aaron Johnston) opening. On Saturday, the four-piece will play The Anthem in Washington D.C., where the horns from support act SNACKTIME will perform with the Biscuits during their show.
