On Friday, Dave Matthews and Tim Reynolds kicked-off their second annual installment of their destination festival in Riviera Maya, Mexico. The multi-day fest features three headlining performances from its hosts as well as sets from Brandi Carlile, Béla Fleck & Abigail Washburn and Joseph. The pair got the event underway last night as they delivered a twenty-two song performance and welcomed a handful of guests.
After an opening set from The Bela Fleck Trio, Dave Matthews took to the stage solo to deliver just the second-ever version of “Do You Remember,” a song that he debut with Tim Reynold last fall at Farm Aid. Matthews was then joined by his longtime friend and collaborator as the duo slyly nodded to their location with the tongue-in-cheek selection “Don’t Drink The Water.” The pair than reeled off a string of Dave Matthews Band classics that included “Tripping Billies,” “Satellite” and “Warehouse.”
Later in their set, Dave and Tim welcomed a number of guests to join them beginning with Brazilian wind-player Carlos Malta, who lent a hand on “What Would You Say,” “Lying in the Hands of God” and “Jimi Thing” and would stick around for the remainder of the main set. Bela Fleck later emerged as the banjo playing extraordinaire assisted on on a trio of old-school tunes – “Typical Situation,” “Lie In Our Graves” and “#41” – which also featured sit-ins from percussionist Antonio Sánchez and bassist Matt Brewer. Dave and Tim brought their first of three sets to a close with the two-song encore of “Some Devil” and “Corn Bread.”
