The 2018 installment of Dave Matthews & Tim Reynolds’ Riviera Maya destination event in Mexico concluded on Sunday night with a memorable performance from the DMB guitarists. Matthews & Reynolds worked through a mix of beloved originals, a few Tim solo cuts and a few rarities. The duo also welcomed Brandi Carlile to sit-in on a pair of songs.

Dave opened solo with “Sweet” off 2012’s Away From The World, marking just the second time since 2015 he’s performed the song. After “The Dreaming Tree,” Matthews and Reynolds dug deep for the return of “Trouble.” Dave hadn’t played “Trouble,” off his 2003 solo album Some Devil, in any form since February 4, 2006. Dave and Tim then reeled off one classic after another including “One Sweet World,” “The Best Of What’s Around,” “Recently” and “Cry Freedom.”

Ten songs into the set, Tim took his first solo turn of the night for “Ode To The Box.” Next up was a career-spanning selection of tunes from Matthews and Reynolds that included “Virginia In The Rain,” “Pig,” “Rooftop,” “Little Red Bird” and “Rapunzel.” Reynolds then treated the crowd to his second solo cut of the evening ahead of Dave returning to the stage with Brandi Carlile. Brandi has sang with Dave a number of times in the past, usually when Matthews would sit-in during her opening sets at DMB shows. Carlile led the pair on “Spoon” off DMB’s 1998 album Before These Crowded Streets as well as a cover of John Prine’s “Angel From Montgomery.” The latter hadn’t been performed at a Dave & Tim show since December 11, 2009.

Dave & Tim ended the set by their lonesomes with “Dancing Nancies.” All told, fans were treated to five songs over the course of two encores. Up first was a Dave solo rendition of “Sister,” which was followed by duets on “Stay (Wasting Time)” and “Crash Into Me.” Matthews and Reynolds returned to end the night and event with the gorgeous “Mercy” and a cover of Phish’s “Waste.” Last night’s “Waste” was the first version performed at a Dave & Tim show. Matthews recently sang the song with Trey Anastasio at Radio City Music Hall in New York City and called it “his favorite.”
