Dark Star Jubilee :: 5.27-5.29.16 :: Legend Valley :: Thornville, OH
Grateful Dead tribute act Dark Star Orchestra hosted their annual Dark Star Jubilee this weekend at Legend Valley in Thornville, Ohio. The weekend featured three full DSO shows, including their Sunday night re-creation of the Dead’s famed August 27, 1972 ‘Sunshine Daydream’ concert originally held in Veneta, Oregon. Saturday’s free-from performance began with Jefferson Airplane members Jack Casady and Jorma Kaukonen – who also performed with their Hot Tuna project – sitting-on on “White Rabbit.” Later in the show Allie Kral, who was on hand for a performance with Yonder Mountain String Band, sat-in on fiddle for “Dire Wolf” and “Catfish John.” DSO’s Friday evening headlining appearance saw the group tackle the Dead’s March 27, 1987 show from Hartford, Connecticut.
Besides the aforementioned Hot Tuna and YMSB, others making music at this year’s Jubilee included longtime Jerry Garcia Band keyboardist Melvin Seals with DSO playing a JGB-inspired set, as well as Leftover Salmon, Steve Kimock & Friends (featuring Jeff Chimenti, Bobby Vega, Dan “Lebo” Lebowitz and Leslie Mendelson), The Wailers, Rumpke Mountain Boys, Like Father Like Son (featuring Rob Eaton, Rob Barraco, Rob Eaton Jr, Tom Barraco and Robin Sylvester), Jeff Mattson, Owsley County, Jemntonic and Matt Reynolds.
