Watch Coldplay Revisit ‘Speed Of Sound’ Live After Nearly A Decade

Coldplay had a huge treat in store for fans in El Paso on Saturday (June 14) as part of the final show of the first North American leg of their Music Of The Spheres Tour. The English band broke out “Speed Of Sound” late in the concert at Sun Bowl in full-band formation for the first time since 2016.

“Speed Of Sound” was released by Coldplay in 2005 as the lead single from their third studio album, X&Y. The synth-heavy single debuted and peaked at number eight on the Billboard Hot 100 chart, marking the first time the band scored a top 10 hit in America.

After hundreds of live performances between 2005 and 2016, Coldplay shelved “Speed Of Sound.” A lone, partial piano version was performed at London’s Wembley Stadium on August 17, 2022.

“Why don’t we try and reclaim the song ‘Speed of Sound’? At some point, we’ll do a proper edit of the song,” Coldplay frontman quipped to El Paso fans from the C-Stage during the final act of the concert. Martin added that he wanted to make the song “a little bit quicker, a little bit shorter, a little bit tighter.”
