Watch Circles Around The Sun Perform With Joe Russo At Lockn’

Circles Around the Sun played what turned out to be Neal Casal’s final performance with the band last Thursday at the Lockn’ festival and welcomed special guest Joe Russo towards the end of the set. Sadly, Casal took his own life just four days later.

Russo, who recorded the forthcoming Circles Around The Sun Meets Joe Russo EP with the quartet was fresh off his main stage appearance with Joe Russo’s Almost Dead. In footage captured by Deadheadland, Joe replaces CATS drummer Mark Levy for what is likely a song off the EP, which will be released on October 18.

Levy and Russo share the same kit about 10 minutes in for a bout of ethereal improvisation. Eventually, the two drummers duel as the rest of the band drops out. Mark Levy then kicks into the “One For Chuck” that would end the set. Russo left CATS to close out the performance on the same stage where they made their live debut three years prior. “Thank you all so very very much, we hope to see you again some time,” Casal noted before the barefoot guitarist picked up his shoes and walked off stage.
