NPR Music’s Tiny Desk Concert series in recognition of Black Music Month continued with a set from the Queen of Funk, Chaka Khan. The 10-time Grammy-winning Rock & Roll Hall of Famer delivered a seven-song session full of hits from her time with Rufus as well as from her solo catalog.
This year, Tiny Desk’s Black Music Month series features the ladies as nine sets will be released “from veterans who’ve paved the way for what we hear today in Black music, to those who are carving out their own paths,” as per NPR Music.

Chaka Khan and her band — bassist Melvin Davis, keyboardist Jesse Milliner, guitarist Rob Bacon, percussionist Euro Zambrano and drummer Jay Williams along with vocalists Audrey Wheeler-Downing, Tiffany Smith and Trina Broussard — kicked off the Tiny Desk with the Stevie Wonder-penned 1974 Rufus hit “Tell Me Something Good.”
As NPR Music’s Mitra I. Arthur noted, “be prepared to watch this show in a location where you can comfortably groove.” From the funky opening strains of “Tell Me Something Good,” it’s clear that Chaka Khan’s Tiny Desk is for dancing.
The set also sees additional Rufus favorites including “What Cha’ Gonna Do For Me,” “Sweet Thing” and “Ain’t Nobody.” Plus, Chaka Khan touches on her solo career with “Through the Fire” as well as the Nickolas Ashford and Valerie Simpson-written “I’m Every Woman” to close the session.
