Esteemed singer-songwriter, producer and guitarist Buddy Miller will issue his first solo album in 15 years on September 11 through New West Records. The self-titled work is previewed with the lead single, “Don’t Look Back,” featuring renowned singer-songwriter Dan Penn.
Buddy Miller boasts an impressive array of guests including Emmylou Harris, The War and Treaty, Lee Ann Womack, Shawn Colvin, Ashley Monroe, Elizabeth Cook, Jim Lauderdale, Larry Campbell and Teresa Williams. The record’s core players are drummer Fred Eltringham, bassist Viktor Krauss, keyboardist Tim Lauer and pedal steel guitarist Steve Fishell along with appearances from The McCrary Sisters.
While Miller released an acclaimed album, In The Throes, with his wife Julie Miller in 2023, Buddy Miller marks his first solo LP since 2011’s The Majestic Silver Strings. Julie’s influence is still present on her husband’s new record.
“The intention was to make a country soul record,” Miller said, “but then I kept running into songs Julie had written that I wanted to put in.”
Buddy Miller produced Buddy Miller with Mike Poole engineering. Buddy also convened with Alasdair MacKenzie to mix the 12-track set.
The first look at Buddy Miller is “Don’t Look Back,” featuring Dan Penn, a co-writer of such classics as “The Dark End of the Street,” “I’m Your Puppet” and “Do Right Woman, Do Right Man.”
“I met Dan around 1994 when he came over to look at a Studer 24-track tape machine I’d listed in the PennySaver,” Miller recalled. “He passed on the Studer, but I gained a hero as a friend. He sang on my first record and I played a few sessions at his studio. His songs have been recorded by Aretha, Otis, Janis, Linda Ronstadt, and so many more — and his singing is as soulful as ever.”
