Bruce Springsteen unveiled his take on the Commodores’ 1985 smash “Nightshift.” The song is one of 15 soul and R&B covers featured on The Boss’ upcoming album, Only The Strong Survive.
Only The Strong Survive marks Springsteen’s 21st studio album and is due out via Columbia Records on November 11. Co-produced with Ron Aniello, the follow-up to 2020’s Letter To You was recorded at Bruce’s Thrill Hill Recording facility in New Jersey. Springsteen noted in an announcement for the LP that he “wanted to make an album where [he] just sang.” The 15-track collection was previously previewed with a take on Frank Wilson’s “Do I Love You (Indeed I Do).”
It was while recording “Nightshift” that Springsteen, Aniello and engineer Rob Lebret decided to name themselves “The Nightshift” while completing Only The Strong Survive. The Commodores frontman Walter Orange penned the song with Dennis Lambert and Franne Golde in honor of Jackie Wilson and Marvin Gaye. Both soul superstars passed away in 1984 with “Nightshift” released the following January.
Bruce Springsteen assembled a full band that included some members of The E Street Band to film a “Nightshift” video. Longtime collaborator Thom Zimny directed the visual.
