Brendan Bayliss Covers Neil Young, Van Morrison, Smashing Pumpkins & More On ‘Wine Not?’
Brendan Bayliss continued his Wine Not? livestream series on Friday night. The set included covers from Neil Young, Van Morrison, Smashing Pumpkins and more along with a bevy of Umphrey’s McGee tunes.
Bayliss greeted everyone by fanning himself with a picture of Cubs hurler Kyle Hendricks, who had pitched the MLB’s first complete game on Opening Day since 2013 on Friday, shutting out the Brewers 3 – 0. The stache is also coming in nicely. Brendan got the music underway with Umphrey’s “Gulf Stream,” a song UM guitarist Jake Cinninger usually sings, followed by just the intro to “Uncle Wally.” Van Morrison’s “Into The Mystic” came next. “Nemo” would be left unfinished as Bayliss headed into “Slacker” and capped off the double UM with Toto’s “Rosanna.”
Next up, more Umphrey’s in “Hourglass” and “Divisions,” the latter of which encompassed Smashing Pumpkins’ “Rhinoceros.” Bayliss then played a tune from the 30db catalog (his collaborative duo with the late great Jeff Austin) called “Grave,” which featured neighbor Tony, aka T-Bird, on harmonica as well as tambourine and led into Guns ‘N’ Roses’ “You’re Crazy” before returning to “Grave.” Annie Bayliss then joined in to sing Neil Young’s “Sail Away.’ Tony also reprised his role on the broom for the Neil tune (T-Bird had added the signature broom sweeps on Young’s “Harvest Moon” the week previous). Annie would stay on to sing Faces’ “Ooh La La.” Bayliss then moved over to the piano to continue alone with a fitting Umphrey’s “You & You Alone.” BB stayed on the piano to close out the set with Elton John’s “Goodbye Yellow Brick Road.”
