Watch Brandi Carlile’s Empowering Cover Of Robyn’s ‘Call Your Girlfriend’

Fresh off three Grammy Award wins, Brandi Carlile initiated a brief solo tour on Monday night with an acoustic performance at the State Theatre in Portland, Maine. The singer-songwriter capped the concert with a cover of Robyn’s “Call Your Girlfriend.”

Carlile’s solo performance on Monday featured five songs off her 2021 album In These Silent Days, which won the Grammy Award in the Best Americana Album category. Carlile performed the In These Silent Days song “Broken Horses,” which earned Best Rock Performance and Best Rock Song Grammys.

Another In These Silent Days song on the setlist was “You And Me On The Rock” featuring Carlile’s wife, Catherine Shepherd Carlile, on accompanying vocals. Near the end of the show, Carlile played piano on “Party Of One” and segued into a cover of Joni Mitchell’s “A Case Of You.”

Carlile then went back to acoustic guitar and previewed her cover of Robyn’s “Call Your Girlfriend” by telling the audience:

I think this song is one of the most brilliant pop songs I’ve ever heard. My girl Lucy Wainwright Roche covered this song. This was actually all her idea. I’m completely stealing her idea. But it’s because I fucking love this song and I love her version of this song so much that I have to try it out for you guys.

This song is about my entire 20s. This is who I used to be and I ain’t proud of it. This is who I was when I met Catherine. That’s all over now.

“Call Your Girlfriend” appeared on Robyn’s 2010 album, Body Talk. Lucy Wainwright Roche recorded her version of the track for her 2013 album, There’s A Last Time for Everything.
