Brandi Carlile Covers Alanis Morissette With Lucius At Red Rocks

Brandi Carlile held a three-show stand at Red Rocks over the weekend. Carlile covered Alanis Morissette with Lucius, who joined the singer-songwriter onstage each night of the run that also featured new song debuts, other special guests and more.

Longtime Carlile bandmates, bassist Phil Hanseroth and guitarist Tim Hanseroth, were among the musicians joining her at Red Rocks. They shared the stage with SistaStrings (Monique Ross and Chauntee Ross), drummer Matt Chamberlain and keyboardist Taylor Mackall.

Friday’s opening night concert began with the live debut of Carlile’s new single, “Returning To Myself.” The song is the title track to her forthcoming album, set for release on October 24.

Lucius vocalists, Jess Wolfe and Holly Laessig, then made their first of several appearances on the Red Rocks stage over the weekend for “You and Me on the Rock.” Later in the main set, Carlile debuted the Returning To Myself track, “Church & State.”

Wolfe and Laessig rejoined Carlile for a cover of Alanis Morissette’s “Uninvited.” The collaborative cover was repeated in the subsequent two shows, and the pair of guest singers assisted on “Two of Us on the Run” as well.

On Saturday night, singer-songwriter Allison Ponthier, who performed opening sets during the run, appeared during the encore. Ponthier accompanied Carlile on The Highwomen’s song “If She Ever Leaves Me” and stuck around for “Hold Out Your Hand.” Sunday’s closing show featured Ponthier making a similar appearance alongside Carlile.

Carlile’s Red Rocks concerts incorporated songs from her collaborative album with Elton John, plus covers by Joni Mitchell, Radiohead, The Pretenders and Tears For Fears. The finale also saw Carlile’s relatives — her brother Jay Carlile’s children, JayJ Carlile and Caroline Carlile — who perform at The Carlile Family Band, taking the stage with Brandi for a performance of their song, “Ruby.”
