One day after receiving the key to the city, Grateful Dead guitarist Bob Weir continued his latest Campfire Tour with the second of two shows at Austin City Limits Live at the Moody Theater in Austin, Texas on Sunday. Weir was backed by the Campfire Band featuring Aaron Dessner, Bryan Devendorf and Scott Devendorf of The National along with Jon Shaw, Josh Kaufman and Steve Kimock.
Bob came out by himself to start the concert with a trio of solo acoustic performances. Up first were later era Grateful Dead compositions “Hell In A Bucket” and “Corrina” followed by the title track from his recent cowboy album, Blue Mountain. The band then came out for takes on Blue Mountain’s “Whatever Happened To Rose,” “Darkest Hour,” “Lay My Lily Down” and “Gonesville” as well as Bob Dylan’s “Most Of The Time” and the Dead classic “Jack Straw.”
Sunday’s second set saw Bob and the band focus on Grateful Dead repertoire favorites after opening with “On The Road Again.” Weir led the troupe on Merle Haggard’s “Mama Tried” followed by “Brown-Eyed Women,” “He’s Gone,” “The Other One,” “Stella Blue” and “Not Fade Away.” The Campfire Band and Bob Weir brought the evening to a close with an “Uncle John’s Band” encore. Next up is a visit to New Orleans on Tuesday night.
