Last night Bob Weir & The Campfire Band resumed the Campfire Tour with a show at Music Hall at Fair Park in Dallas. The Grateful Dead guitarist and his backing band continued to expand their live repertoire by incorporating a pair of Dead staples into one of their setlists for the first time.
Weir opened the tour performing solo acoustic renditions of three songs, Bob Dylan’s “When I Paint My Masterpiece,” Little Feat’s “Easy To Slip” and the title track to last year’s solo LP Blue Mountain. Bobby was then joined by Aaron Dessner, Bryan Devendorf and Scott Devendorf of The National along with Jon Shaw, Josh Kaufman and Steve Kimock for a string of Blue Mountain tunes, including “Only A River,” “Lay My Lily Down” and “Gonesville.”
A take on Marty Robbins’ “El Paso” opened the second set, followed by The Campfire Band’s first rendition of fellow regular Dead cover “Deep Elem Blues.” Set two was filled out with other Grateful Dead favorites “Friend Of The Devil,” “Althea,” “Cassidy” and “Standing On The Moon.” The second half also saw Weir lead the ensemble on their first live performance of “Truckin’.” Opening night’s set two closed with “Going Down The Road Feeling Bad” and the encore featured the Blue Mountain track “Ki-Yi Bossie” and a rendition of “Ripple.”
The Campfire Tour continues Saturday with the first of two shows in Austin at ACL Live at The Moody Theater. Watch audience-shot videos of Thursday’s show below:
