Blake Mills & Pino Palladino Appear On ‘Eric Krasno Plus One’ Podcast
Producer Blake Mills and bassist Pino Palladino were the guests on this week’s episode of the Osiris Media podcast Eric Krasno Plus One. The musicians discussed their new collaborative album, Notes With Attachments, and more.
The podcast kicks off with the duo talking about how they first crossed paths, which took place while Mills was working on John Legend’s 2016 album, Darkness And Light. “The idea was to have a live rhythm section,” Blake said, “so immediately Pino and Chris Dave came to mind…Pino and I hit it off real quick, on a musical level and also on process in the studio.”
Krasno followed up with a question about the pair’s process in the studio and how they achieved some of the unique sounds and textures on Notes With Attachments. With both musicians exhibiting a penchant for experimentation, Krasno also inquired as to how much of the compositions were set and how much came organically. “I’d been carrying a lot of this stuff around for a long time, not really knowing how to approach doing a full record,” Palladino said. “I knew more what I didn’t want to do…but when I met Blake and we talked about it, it started being a really interesting proposition for me.”
Palladino also discusses bass playing and specifically his work on the fretless bass for Notes With Attachments as well as how he evolved on the instrument over the years. Krasno also highlights Pino’s work on the Tedeschi Trucks Band’s 2013 album Made Up Mind, which Krasno also worked on. Additionally, Mills and Krasno talk guitars as well as producing processes and techniques. Eric wraps up the interview by asking if the duo plan on taking Notes With Attachments out on the road when live music returns, “No doubt,” Mills replied.
