Béla Fleck is featured on the latest episode of Osiris Media podcast Eric Krasno Plus One. Fleck discusses a variety of topics with host Eric Krasno including the formation of Béla Fleck and the Flecktones, how he met his wife, Abigail Washburn, life during the pandemic and more.

Kraz begins by talking about the results of the presidential election and asks listeners to share their views on the matter. Eric describes Béla as one of his favorite artists and recalls driving across the country to see The Flecktones at the Telluride Bluegrass Festival.

The pair start with a discussion of how Fleck has dealt with life during the pandemic. Béla notes some days he’ll spend lots of time in his home studio working on new music, while on other days parental duties come first. He describes some of the many projects that are on the way and reveals he doesn’t miss touring.

Fleck then talks about how New Grass Revival was influenced by the generation of bluegrass musicians that came before them and he’s excited that such acts as Yonder Mountain String Band and Billy Strings are influenced by his music. Krasno goes on to explain The Flecktones were a gateway to bluegrass music for him.

Béla describes his early days as a musician and his unorthodox approach to music and playing banjo. He notes there were a lot of people who laughed at the banjo when he was growing up and he aimed to be “the best he could be” to bring a new appreciation to the instrument. Next, Fleck explains the genesis of The Flecktones and how the band knew they were on to something special due to the reaction from the crowd at their live debut, a taping for a PBS TV program.

Fleck also discusses how Jeff Coffin joined the band and his advice to the saxophonist when Dave Matthews asked Coffin to tour with Dave Matthews Band. Other topics hit upon are his musical and personal relationship with wife Abigail Washburn, his Throw Down Your Heart: The Complete Africa Sessions project and more.
