The Black Crowes continued to dig deep into their repertoire on Friday (August 1) in Verona, New York. The band led by frontman Chris Robinson performed a cover of The Rolling Stones' “Silver Train” for the first time since 2008 to end their concert at the Turning Stone Event Center.
The return of “Silver Train” came three nights after The Crowes dusted off “What Is Home” in Bangor, Maine and two nights after they revived “Nonfiction” in Gilford, New Hampshire. Penned and sung by Rich Robinson, Before The Frost…Until The Freeze gem “What Is Home” had been shelved since 2013, the same year the group had previously played Amorica standout “Nonfiction.”
The Black Crowes — siblings Chris and Rich Robinson and bassist Sven Pipien along with touring members keyboardist Erik Deutsch, guitarist Nico Bereciartua, drummer Cully Symington and backing vocalists Mackenzie Adams and Lesley Grant — are currently on the road for the Happiness Bastards (The Reprise) Tour. Friday’s concert was loaded with songs from the group’s first two albums, including five tracks from 1992’s The Southern Harmony and Musical Companion and three off 1990’s Shake Your Money Maker.
The setlist at Turning Stone also featured “Dirty Cold Sun” and “Wanting And Waiting” from Happiness Bastards, the band’s Grammy-nominated 2024 album as well as Amorica cuts “P. 25 London” and “Wiser Time” and By Your Side’s “Kickin’ My Heart Around.” Additionally, The Black Crowes performed Amorica sessions outtake “Feathers” and a recently debuted cover of The Creation’s “Making Time” sung by Rich Robinson.
When the group returned for the encore, they romped through “Silver Train.” The Rolling Stones originally released the song on their 1973 album Goat’s Head Soup. The Black Crowes debuted their take on the rollicking tune on October 4, 1996 and performed 19 additional versions through December 9, 2008 before putting the cover on ice for nearly 17 years.
