Billy Strings took to social media shortly after Widespread Panic revealed guitarist Jimmy Herring is temporarily stepping away from touring to undergo another round of treatment for throat cancer. Strings wrote and published a post rallying Panic’s fanbase and expressing his love and appreciation for Herring.
The bluegrass guitarist revealed he was called by Widespread Panic before their recent New Year’s Eve run to potentially fill-in for Jimmy Herring. Thankfully, Herring was able to perform all three nights at Atlanta’s Fox Theater, while Strings made substantial guest appearances at each show.
“I was so grateful that I had New Year’s Eve off this year when my buddies in Widespread Panic called me and said that they may need me to fill-in for Jimmy, who is navigating some serious health problems. I came ready to play as much or as little as they needed me and I was so happy but not at all surprised when Jimmy absolutely KILLED it and worked those three shows like the friggin’ beast that he is!!,” Strings’ note began.
“They didn’t need me, That’s for sure. But we had such a blast playing together. He is such an amazing cat and beautiful soul. A true master at his craft and genuinely kind human. I’ll be praying for him and his whole family and crew until he kicks this shit’s ass and gets back out on stage,” Billy Strings added.
Billy Strings also addressed Widespread Panic fans about Nick Johnson, who will fill in for Herring while the guitarist deals with his health issues. “And all you long-haired spreadnecks don’t fret!! Nick Johnson is an absolute monster on the guitar and is going to handle the reins until Gandalf the loud can get back in the saddle. Let’s all send the band our love and light. WSMFP forever and always!!!”
Widespread Panic first revealed Herring's throat cancer diagnosis in July 2024. The Georgia rockers wound up canceling all shows through the end of the year. Jimmy Herring and Widespread Panic made their triumphant return to the stage in Atlantic City on Valentine’s Day in 2025.
This time around, Panic will continue touring with Nick Johnson tapped to handle lead guitar duties. Herring’s “prognosis is positive” according to the statement posted by the band on Thursday, January 8 and Jimmy “is expected to return in the near future.”
