“Fkn love you fellers,” reads a comment posted by Billy Strings to Widespread Panic's photo set sharing their setlist from last night’s concert in Atlanta. Strings added a high-five emoji to the end of his reply to the post outlining the events at The Fox Theatre that saw him once again sit-in with the band.
Strings and WSP first shared the live stage together in 2019. They repeated the collaboration in 2021 and earlier this year in Chicago. Monday’s concert at The Fox began Panic’s three-night New Year’s Eve run at the familiar Atlanta venue.
Strings, who has covered Widespread Panic songs over the past few years, did not schedule a New Year’s Eve run this year. He emerged in the middle of Monday’s second set and played electric guitar between WSP frontman John Bell and guitarist Jimmy Herring.
Strings and Herring engaged in several spirited runs throughout the guest player’s time with the band. The band first tasked Strings with assisting on “Stop Breakin’ Down Blues.” Exemplifying Strings’ familiarity with Widespread Panic’s repertoire, the set continued with the weaving together of “Fishwater” into “Surprise Valley” back into “Fishwater” before returning again to “Surprise Valley.”
“Blackout Blues” brought the Billy-bolstered portion of the second set to an end. String returned with Panic for the encore, which set off with The Dillards’ “There is a Time.” The show was completed with Buffalo Springfield’s “Mr. Soul.”
