The Avett Brothers Fit Rarities Into Providence Concert

The Avett Brothers resumed their 2025 tour last night with a concert in Providence, Rhode Island. The band led by siblings Seth and Scott Avett dug deep into their massive catalog for the performance at Providence Performing Arts Center by reviving three songs they hadn’t played in at least two years.

The Avetts presented a career-spanning setlist to the Providence faithful on Wednesday. Songs from nine of the group’s 11 studio albums made the setlist, along with covers of traditionals “Black Mountain Rag” and “Farewell Trio” and a take on Toby Keith’s “As Good As I Once Was.”

After opening with “Laundry Room” and “Talk On Indolence,” The Avett Brothers dusted off “SSS.” The bombastic track from 2004’s Mignonette hadn’t been played since May 20, 2023 as per setlist repository db.nov.blue.

Staples “Go To Sleep,” “Head Full Of Doubt/Road Full Of Promise” and “Forever Now” followed. Next, The Avetts pulled out “January Wedding” for its first play in 160 shows. “January Wedding,” which last saw action on July 9, 2022, was one of five cuts off the band’s acclaimed 2009 LP I And Love And You performed in Providence on Wednesday.

The show moved forward with the aforementioned “Black Mountain Rag” and The Avett Brothers chestnut “Love Of A Girl.” Then, Seth Avett had a turn in the solo spotlight for the biggest bust out of the night, “My Last Song To Jenny.” The ballad from the brothers’ formative days was previously missing from setlists since October 2, 2021 — a 204 show gap.

The Avett Brothers focused on fan-favorites including “Murder In The City,” “Salina,” “Satan Pulls The Strings” and “Slight Figure Of Speech” over the duration of their 24-song main set. An encore of “No Hard Feelings” and “Ain’t No Man” punctuated the concert.
