The Avett Brothers Break Out Billy Joel Cover In Richmond

The Avett Brothers’ spring tour hit Virginia Credit Union Live! at Richmond Raceway in Richmond, Virginia on Thursday. The concert saw a breakout of the Billy Joel classic “Movin’ Out (Anthony’s Song)” for the first time in seven years.

“Movin’ Out (Anthony’s Song)” originally appears on Billy Joel’s 1977 album, The Stranger. The performance in Richmond saw Scott Avett taking a breather with guitarist Seth Avett and bassist Bob Crawford delivering the bust out cover as a duo. The last time “Movin’ Out” appeared at an Avett show came on July 5 near Portland, Oregon, as per Setlist.FM stats.

The Avett Brothers kicked off the concert with “Laundry Room,” off their landmark 2009 LP, I and Love and You. The band also offered three songs from their 2024 record The Avett Brothers: “Love of a Girl,” “Forever Now” and “Country Kid.”

Additional fan-favorites performed included “Murder in the City,” “Head Full of Doubt/Road Full of Promise” and “No Hard Feelings.” Just ahead of the Billy Joel breakout, Seth, Scott and Crawford performed the traditional “Groundhog,” a nod to their fellow North Carolina folk hero Doc Watson.

The main set came to a close with True Sadness (2016) cut “Ain’t No Man.” The Avett Brothers returned to encore with “The Traveling Song” and concluded the concert with “My Losing Bet.”
