Audio: Midnight North Teams With Nicole Atkins, Scott Metzger & More For ‘Brooklyn Is The Band’

On April 5, Brooklyn Bowl in New York City hosted a concert dubbed “Brooklyn Is The Band.” The evening started with a set from Midnight North followed by a Nicole Atkins set and then a combined tribute to the music of The Band. A soundboard matrix recording of The Band tribute and the Midnight North set has surfaced and can be streamed below.

Midnight North’s set featured guest appearances from The Urban Blight Horns and violin wiz Katie Jacoby. The horn section of Clark Gayton, Kevin Batchelor and Paul Vercesi was also on stage for most of the tribute to The Band. Keyboardist Erik Deutsch of Leftover Salmon contributed to all of The Band tribute set which included guest spots from guitarists Scott Metzger and Binky Griptite (Dap-Kings) as well as Jacoby.

While Midnight North and Atkins focused on songs from The Band’s repertoire during the tribute set, they also worked in two tunes that appear on Levon Helm’s Dirt Farmer LP, “When I Go Away” and the Grateful Dead’s “Tennessee Jed.” The set also featured a cover of Bobby Charles’s 1972 song “Street People.” Metzger added to both “Street People” and a rendition of “Don’t Do It,” while Jacoby’s Band tribute sit-in was for “Long Black Veil” and “Evangeline.” April 5th’s “Brooklyn Is The Band” concert concluded with an encore of “I Shall Be Released” and “The Weight.”
