Adele, David Bowie & Sturgill Simpson Highlight 59th Grammy Awards

Last night the 59th annual Grammy Awards were held in at the STAPLES Center in Los Angeles. British singer Adele earned Grammys for Record Of The Year and Song Of The Year for “Hello” and Album Of The Year for 25.

Legendary musician David Bowie was given several posthumous awards and Sturgill Simpson both performed with The Dap-Kings horns and took home Best Country Album. Bowie’s awards for Best Rock Performance, Best Rock Song and Best Alternative Music Album were the first musical Grammys given to the late icon whose Blackstar album also was named Best Recording Package and Best Engineered Album, Non-Classical.

Adele opened the program with a rendition of “Hello” and later performed a re-started tribute to George Michael. Other notable performances included Daft Punk’s return alongside The Weekend, hip-hop legends A Tribe Called Quest with Anderson .Paak, Busta Rhymes and others, Best New Artist and Best Rap Album winner Chance The Rapper with Kirk Franklin, a tribute to Prince featuring Bruno Mars and Morris Day & The Time, a technical-difficulties-plagued Lady Gaga and Metallica collaboration, William Bell and Gary Clark Jr. and Beyoncé’s stunning spectacle.

Snarky Puppy was given the award for Best Contemporary Instrumental Album for Culcha Vulcha and John Scofield won Best Jazz Instrumental Album for Country For Old Men and Best Improvised Jazz Solo for “I’m So Lonesome I Could Cry.” Renowned 83-year-old bluesman Bobby Rush won his first Grammy Award, taking home the Best Traditional Blues Album trophy for Porcupine Meat. Nobel Laureate Bob Dylan also won the Grammy for Best Historical Album for his The Cutting Edge 1965-1966: The Bootleg Series, Vol.12 (Collector’s Edition). Head here for a full list of winners.
