13-year-old pianist Owen York may have been born 30 years (nearly to the day!) after The Who released their second rock opera Quadrophenia, but the talented youngster has been moved by Pete Townshend’s tale of working class mod Jimmy. York has unveiled a 12+ minute medley featuring portions of all 17 songs found on The Who’s Quadrophenia.
Highlights of Owen’s Quadrophenia medley include elements of “5:15,” “Drowned,” “Love Reign O’er Me,” “Doctor Jimmy” and “The Punk Meets The Godfather.” As is typical with York’s medleys, his jazz training and improvisational leanings are prevalent in the mix. Watch Owen York’s Quadrophenia medley:
This medley is just the latest from the talented youngster, who caught our attention with his previous tributes to Beck, Radiohead and Umphrey’s McGee. Check out Owen’s YouTube channel for more from York and for future medleys.
The National Radio Network Music of Your Life recently did a half-hour interview with York which included his covers of songs by Steely Dan, Outkast and David Bowie. Earlier this year Owen beat Phish in the “covering ‘Ziggy Stardust’ at an arena” race. Here’s his 90 second take on the Bowie classic, filmed at Madison Square Garden:
Owen has just begun his second year as pianist in Rockland Youth Jazz Ensemble, an elite group of musicians from New York and New Jersey. He is its youngest member.
