Phish Debuts Four More In Bend | Setlist & The Skinny
By Scott Bernstein Jul 23, 2015 • 10:30 am PDT

Phish came out at 6:30 local time and opened with “Stash,” just the second time the Picture Of Nectar track has kicked off a show since 2003. Guitarist Trey Anastasio and keyboardist Page McConnell expertly followed each other’s trails for the duration of the mellow “Stash” jam. Bassist Mike Gordon then stepped up to lead the band through the Phish debut of “How Many People Are You?,” a song he wrote with Scott Murawski that his solo band performed during their June tour. The rocking “How Many People Are You?” was followed by the breezy “Winterqueen.” McConnell took a moment to thank the crowd, while Anastasio noted a sign for “Peaches” in the audience and said he’s a fan of Peaches the musician as well making light of the sign’s intention to get Phish to cover Frank Zappa’s “Peaches En Regalia.” Anastasio suggested fans pick up Peaches’ sophomore effort, The Teaches Of Peaches. Page then fronted the band on the Phish debut of “Heavy Rotation,” a tune McConnell wrote for his 2007 self-titled studio album. “Heavy Rotation’s” bright and poppy verses contrasted with its dark and intense, Traffic-esque jam.
“Back On The Train” featured a creative solo from Trey with a few of the licks he perfected for Fare Thee Well thrown in for good measure. Next, it was back to unveiling material from the band member’s solo projects as Anastasio led the Phish debut of “Scabbard.” Trey penned the proggy number for his 2012 solo album, Traveler, and has been performing “Scabbard” live with TAB since the fall of 2012. The ending of “Scabbard” carried over to the beginning of “Maze.” While Anastasio had his tenative moments on Tuesday, he played with authority throughout the night on Wednesday especially as he shredded through “Maze.” Phish wasn’t done debuting new material in the first set as Anastasio stepped into the spotlight once again to sing “Mercury,” another song he wrote with lyricist Tom Marshall during an early 2015 songwriting session in North Carolina. “Mercury” had two distinct movements connected by a pattern drummer Jon Fishman banged out on marimba lumina. “Possum” put an exclamation mark on a first set containing four Phish debuts.
“A Song I Heard The Ocean Sing,” the tour’s first song from the Vermonters’ 2.0 era, opened the second set. Phish quickly moved beyond the song’s normal boundaries into a major-key, blissful jam before they transitioned into another tune from the 2.0 era – “Waves.” Fishman starred as he propelled the band into a light, ambient space they explored for a few minutes as Trey noodled out delay-heavy licks. Anastasio’s en fuego night continued with his Gilmour-like tone on “Wingsuit” and an inspired “Farmhouse” solo. “Simple” was played next to the delight of those who created “we’ve got it simple ’cause we’ve got a Bend” hats for the run. After the quartet had their fill of the standard, pretty “Simple” jam they progressed towards a darker, bluesy milieu. The foursome connected on a dirty, psych-tinged chord progression which made for the brief tour’s most inspired improv thus far. Out of the darkness rose the set-closing “First Tube” which saw Anastasio stomp around stage like a man possessed. The band had one more surprise in store for the encore as “Bathtub Gin” served in that role for the first time since July 12, 1996 in Amsterdam and just the third time ever. Phish Summer Tour continues on Friday at Shoreline Amphitheater in Mountain View, California.
