Black Crowes Offer Rarities, Covers And Guests At The Cap

The Black Crowes are currently in the midst of a four-show run of acoustic performances at The Capitol Theatre in Port Chester, NY. Friday and Saturday’s shows were filled to the brim with rarities, covers and a number of guest spots from the likes of Larry Campbell, Sam Bush and Joe Russo.

On Friday night, The Crowes were joined by multi-instrumentalist Larry Campbell and percussionist Otto Hauser for nearly the entire show. While most shows on the band’s Lay Down With Number 13 have focused on the Crowes’ best-known songs, the southern rockers dug deep for a number of rarities at both shows. Friday saw the debut of David Allan Coe’s country hit “Tennessee Whiskey” and “Spaceball Ricochet” by T-Rex as well as plenty of rarely-played tunes such as “Thunderstorm 6:54,” “Girl From The North Country” and “Deep River Blues.” Both Rich and Chris Robinson offered a solo song a piece in “Follow You Forever” and “100 Days Of Rain” respectively. Saturday saw more of the same with guests Campbell, Sam Bush (mandolin) and Joe Russo (percussion) sitting in for the majority of the show. The 22-song performance started off with the Crowes’ first take on “Torn & Frayed” by The Rolling Stones since 2010 and continued with the rare “Downtown Money Waster” and the beloved “Good Friday.” From there, the band debuted their version of Danny Whitten’s Crazy Horse gem “I Don’t Want To Talk About It” and later offered takes on Manassas’s “So Many Times” and Jack Bonus’s “The Hobo Song” before unveiling a pair of Pink Floyd covers in “The Gnome” and “Chapter 24.” Even the newest Crowe, Jackie Greene, had a chance to lead the band through a new cover -Bob Willis’s “Milk Cow Blues.” For their solo spotlights, Rich and Chris delivered “Lost And Found” and “Like A Tumbleweed In Eden” respectively. The Crowes had a few more surprises lined up for an encore that saw guest appearances from guitarists John Fullbright and Neal Casal. While “Hot Burrito #1” and “Hot Burrito #2” by the Flying Burrito Brothers had been performed by The Black Crowes a number of times over the years, last night marked the first version of each since 2010 and was followed by only their second take on “The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down” by The Band of 2013.
