Exclusive Live Umphrey's Video!

Umphrey's McGee
Umphrey's McGee launched their current tour with multi-night run in Colorado, where they debuted much of the new material from their latest release, Mantis, for the first time live. JamBase is pleased to present the exclusive premier of the video soundboard recording of the title track from UM's performance in Denver on January 24, 2009. The video captures one of the first performances of "Mantis," and also displays the stellar work of Umphrey's new lighting director, Jeff Waful.

Pop over to JamBaseTV and watch the exclusive video HERE.

Musically, Mantis is being hailed as the band's most progressive, melodic and artistically cohesive album to date. Here's what critics are saying:

"…the sleekly constructed tunes…sparkle with a sweetness and soul that's more than the sum of their influences." - Entertainment Weekly

"…meticulous… If complexity is the standard by which it should be judged, Mantis warranted the buildup [of its release]." – New York Times

"A beautiful music gumbo… The band pulls off the trans-genre trick without a hitch." - Associated Press

"…their slickest and most ambitious tunes yet." – Rolling Stone

"…an amazing transition." - BLURT

"…razor sharp compositions… surgical precision, stop-start build-ups, hair metal riffs, and anthemic crescendos…not to mention some of the most technical and inspired guitar soloing you'll hear on an album…" – Relix Magazine

"…fresh, fluid, and classic. Mantis is a culmination of a buzz that has surrounded this band since its inception.... From jam band princes to prog-rock kings, Umphrey's McGee has arrived." – Honest Tune

"…fluid and majestic." - Washington Post Express

Look for the new material on Mantis to get a live workout in 2009. Watch Umphrey's McGee on PBS's critically acclaimed concert series, Soundstage, which premiered on February 5 and airs nationally in different markets. Or catch them live on tour.

very reminiscent of late 70's prog-type movement.

and i like a 30 min. jam as long as the next guy, (being completely serious mind you) but i feel like the featured song was still a bit long-winded and that a lot of ump fans will not be too fond... guess we'll find out with the upcoming flame war:

i agree with groovatronics. a lot of the transitions and time changes seemed contrived. i think it could've been a lot less complex and been just as fun.

I was strangely hesitant to get in to UM to begin with. Don't exactly know why. Then I saw them rip it live for the first time, and that was it. Mantis is there best album hands down, and Live at the Murat is phenominal.

ok, I just watched the video. I don't know. I definetley know that Umphrey's McGee does not suck, but it kinda just sucks listening to them. They are obviously very talented musicians, but what else?

Now listen here haters. Umph has had its up and downs, but download anything from the past year or so and its tight as hell. Bayliss and Cinninger have this ridiculous connection and when theyre tight the whole band gets better. Mantis is a good album. not a great album but a good umphreys almbum. What really matters is what they do with it live, and the jambase TV segment pretty much sold me a ticket to summercamp(along with the plethora of other amazing talent that will be there). See yah there w00ks.

mayoandmustard, very original stuff. Both of your comments were excerpts from something you got off food.com. If your going to try and humor us with food recipes, create your own, or better yet just don't post this annoying crap.

I didn't watch this video, but I already have the live recording of this performance. The few times that they have performed this cut live have done the album version of the song little justice. The intstrumental sections of the tune transfer well to the stage, but as of yet, the vocal harmonies have not locked. I have a very strong belief that they will clean this song up live and it will become one of their monster vehicles for improvisation. For now, I wish they had posted 1348.

This is very exciting times for us Umphrey fans. I am looking forward to the two shows back to back at the Workplay in Birmingham... They have sold out this venue foe the last two years. The sound is great and the southern hospitality is everywhere. So if you are anywhere close to Birmingham the first week of March these are two shows worth catching. March 4th and 5th see you there.

Im getting really sick of the Umprey's negativity on Jambase. What gives folks? This is coming up again and again.

They are an extremely talented and hard working band, with something to say and play.

Ok so I love UM. I have seen them 21 times and ALMOST every show has been amazing. They rock face and melt face all night. But Mantis is by far the worst album they have/will ever put out. They seem to be drifting from the funky fun stuff and getting more serious. I dont know bout u guys but who is tryin to be serious at a show. right? Mantis doesnt even sound like a jam band album shit. This is not the UM i knew and loved before mantis. Im still a HUGE fan cuz their old stuff is sum of the best trippin jam tunes ive ever heard. Check out shows from 2002 and 2003! BOMB!

i mentioned this already on the show review article, but saturday didn't sound that good at all... that video actually featured one of the finer moments at the fillmore. the whole show that night was jittery, choppy, and completely lacking flow. i get the feeling that a lot of the UM haters hear a small piece of a bad show like this one and decide that they're terrible, but man, when they are on it's nothing short of magic fire... they've put on two of the best shows i've ever seen, and i go to a ton of all kinds of shows. that's all! peace

Thanks for the Live Umph... This band is amazing, what a show! Their own sound, not some copycat band. Go See Them Live!!!!!! I think they just keep gettting better and better. Yes it is progressive like some music in the 70's but very orginial and technical thats why it's hard to repouce it live... Mantis just came out , give them time to perfect it live
