Keyboardist Eli Winderman (Dopapod), bassist Jonathan Colman (Muscle Tough) and drummer John Morgan Kimock (Oteil & Friends, Mike Gordon, Crosby Collective) formed a new trio earlier this year. The band dubbed Winderman, Colman & Kimock recently released their debut single, a groovy instrumental rendition of the Grateful Dead's “Help On The Way/Slipknot!”
Winderman, Colman & Kimock first embarked on a run of concerts in March. The trio mixed originals and a diverse set of covers at each of their first three shows. Next up for the group are a pair of Phish after parties at Ardmore Music Hall near Philadelphia on July 15 and 16. Guitarist Rob Compa (Dopapod/Neighbor) will join as their guest on the 15th with Jake Brownstein (Eggy) filling the special guest guitarist role on the 16th.

All three musicians weighed in on the new project. “This really is just such a fun band to play with. We all get where each other are coming from musically and have a diverse shared collection of influences. Our first two releases are going to be covers of Grateful Dead and Aphex Twin but put through a blender with MMW and Herbie Hancock. It’s been really fun experimenting and finding our voice on our original material too,” explained Winderman.
“It’s a supportive environment filled with lots of mutual respect and trust. We all have a lot of headroom chops-wise, but the magic is in dancing around each other in subtle and supportive ways. Our combined experience is massive and the sky is the limit with the music feeling good in these infancy moments,” Colman commented.
“I can feel this band’s spirit in alot of the music I grew up listening to in the late 90’s early 2000’s. We love MMW, JFJO, Benevento/Russo, The Slip and the spark those bands used to improvise and create together. I can very happily call this a home where my playing and listening can grow,” added John Morgan Kimock.
Winderman, Colman & Kimock recorded “Help On The Way/Slipknot!” at Philadelphia studio Spice House Sound. The songs are the first two links of a holy triumvariate that ends with “Franklin’s Tower.” The Grateful Dead premiered the suite live on June 17, 1975 at San Francisco’s Winterland Arena. A studio version of the trilogy was released on the band’s Blues For Allah album on September 1, 1975.
