the Campus security was beat and the sound inside was indeed muddy. Funny, I thought it was sold out, but we were on the General Admission floor and it was only two thirds full for the entire show.

But the show was high energy for sure, although the Dead were a bit sloppy and not entirely sure of where each other were going. But the energy and love for Barack was intense and reassuring. Couldn't help but have a huge smile all night.

sounds great and both bands put up great setlists, does anyone have a link to the source of that recording of the ABB show? i dont like downloading torrents so if i could find it that would be nice

Nicet review, I'll be sure to check out this recording! Glad to hear that the audience was more accepting of the theme of the event this time. At the Deadheads for Obama show at The Warfield there were some dissenting voices, including several people who raised a Ron Paul banner near the end of the show which sparked a minor scuffle. But that was back in February, before the two major parties had settled on their candidates. We now know that the next president will be either Obama or McCain, and it's difficult to imagine any deadhead not being able to see that Obama is candidate capable of leading us out of this financial crisis and this war and into the future.

I had a lot of fun at this show......the crowd really made the night it was incredible! They may have played a lil sloppy but I am glad to see them reunite for such a great cause.

Sucks they were so sloppy. You'd think they could have dusted off the cobwebs a little more to play a rippin' show for a comeback.

CORRECTION: Ron Holloway joined the band for some soulful sax on "Dreams" and "It Ain't Me Babe." The later was sung by Susan Tedeschi, who also sang Derek and The Dominoes' "Anyday."

Susan sang Dylan's Don't think Twice It's Alright. She did not sing Dylan's It Ain't Me Babe, though I think Warren Haynes would do and ace job on covering that song.

Oh man, this is truely awesome! Thanks Jambase.com for streaming the show in it's fullness. I love the Dead, I love Allmans and sorry for those haters, I love Obama and have for the past two years. I don't care if you hate him, but if you really want another 2004 to happen and watch on as our country crumbles under Republican rule again, then so be it. I'm not saying he's the perfect man for the job, but he's the best chance we got for something better. I live in AZ and can tell you that you have no idea what you're in for if you let a monster like Mccain get this victory. The important thing is to get your ASSES out there and vote. The Dead can do whatever they want and more power to them for supporting Obama. The show sounds great and is making ache in anticipation for next years tour!

no jimmy and i'm a little disappointed that no one else from abb came out and jammed with the dead. it was a fantastic night tho. the energy was enough to make this show historic. cant wait to see them sometime in the spring after a little bit of rehearsal time

Sounds like it was a great time for all there. Very nice of jambase to stream the show for us all to enjoy. The article was right on the money they do sound a little off, but what do you expect after four years, no worries though I know for 09 they are gonna be meshing and jammin flawlessly. great show. my 2nd show(1st being bonnaroo '04) my wife's first experience with "the scene". haha. i loved it. the dead seemed a little off at first but i think once they got into st stephen they soared through the rest of the night. and the abb were incredible. thank you bobby, phil, mickey,bill and to all that made it a special birthday for me. peace and much love.

So, did they actually play "Touch" or not? Did they just do the chorus? Or did they "make a statement" and speak it? Can you be more vague? Who else was playing with the Dead? Who was in the Allman's line up?

I've heard the audio. They need lots of rehearsal and Robert Hunter to churn out some new tunes for them. Oh well if they tour I won't be going anway so I'm not to concerned. Actually I'm glad that they may tour as it will possibly free up John Molo, hopefully he can fit in some David Nelson and Friends gigs. DNF is where its at Deadwise.

As for the benefit it was a good cause and I'm glad they did it and I hope it helps out Barack Obama and Biden and our country.

Thumbs up to Andrew for posting a review without sugar coating. I listened to a portion of the recordings and they sounded like a nostalgia act playing a rehearsal. If you were there, I hope you enjoyed; but everything in the post-GD world these days simply reeks of nostalgia these days. I might as well go see Three Dog Night!

who's the jerk that wrote this article? what's with the negitivity? am i the only deadhead that finds this show satisfactory? if you find rat-dog better than is show- go smoke some more pot and see where else it gets you.

I thought the show was pretty good, but they were definitely sloppy on the transitions and Bobby flubbed a lot of lyrics. I was flooded with emotions for the first few songs and can only imagine what was going through their minds. Warren seemed to hold back a bit but he put out some tasty licks which were reminiscent of early 70's Jerry. Chimenti had a short but sweet solo during Unbroken Chain. The only thing missing was the Big Guy, who simply can't be replaced. Nobody is going to take the music to the places that he did. Not Kimock, Karan, or Herring. I'll never forget seeing TOO at MCI center when the boys laid out a sick Terrapin jam on a silver platter for Jimmy Herring and he sat there staring at his guitar doing nothing. Ughh. Despite the mistakes, the show was a lot of fun.

The Allman Brothers did not disappoint. The Dead, well, they could have done much better. Hopefully they'll work it out before summer tour. As for the scene, there were more people outside smoking than were inside for the messiah's message, which is safe to say that I think a majority of the people there were there for the music, not the politics. Thank goodness.

Man, oh man. I completely disagree with the critique. I've been a long-time Deadhead as well as long-time critic of their playing. This show ROCKED. They played GREAT. If you've ever been to a Grateful Dead show, you'd remember that perfection is not the goal. The goal is to take chances and improvise with soul & talent. Some nights were better than others, but this night - especially with their energy - was incredible.

Truckin' - the changes were on. They extended a space in between the first bridge and the 4th verse, where there typically is no space and Bobby went OFF on his guitar. Played some SICK licks.

US Blues - Pretty good...one of the weakest tunes of the set. I guess they HAD to play it tho.

Help On The Way / Slipknot! - sloppy? Warren's solo was good. Chimenti's Rhodes solo was SICK. They hit the "Slipknot!" diminished run right on and the jam was WONDERFUL. At the end of the "Slipknot" jam, they all kinda lost the "1" - no big deal - as Mr. Weir turned towards the drummers and immediately got eveyone on the same page, then they started the spooky walkup that leads into the outtro of "Slipknot!" Well done, IMO - a pure Grateful Dead moment.

Franklin's Tower - Pretty good. Nice reaction by the crowd (of course) when Phil started singing. No huge peaks - well played, but not insane.

Playin' In The Band - nice intro and REALLY nice jam. Warren a tad off his licks - not bad, but not his best.

Dark Star - I believe the critic here wrote "failed to achieve liftoff." What kind of crack were you smoking?! That jam reached EPIC heights of psychedelia (and I wasn't on ANY). Astounding glory was reached - you, my friend, were WAY off-base on this. Listen again...even the average-quality audience recording proves you wrong.

Yes, they stopped. Gee, never saw the Dead do THAT. Just because there was no transition into the next song - you got a problem with that? My take was that the Dark Star expelled SO much energy, they just needed to collect themselves a bit and weren't quite sure where to go. THAT'S the Grateful Dead, and I'll take moments like that all day.

Saint Stephen - I called it about 45 seconds before they started it. VERY tight and well played. The jam before the final verse was SICK. I seriously doubt someone panning this section of the show (PITB through this song) and their abilities to understand what's going on onstage. Amazing moments between Bob, Phil, Mickey & Billy during these last 3-5 tunes...simply amazing.

Unbroken Chain - very nice choice, Phil. It looked like Phil got a bit lost in the big jam, but finally got it and brought everyone back. The transition back into the song was a bit off, but again - not bad. Great energy throughout the last 5 songs and some amazingly tight moments.

The Other One - Great call. WTF with the lights?!! Oh well - no problem. Warren goes OFF as does Chimenti. A nice song with Bob vocals that shows off a bit of the guest musicians.

Throwin' Stones - Well played. Nothing special, but again - HAD to be done. A nice version. KILLER jam before the PITB reprise.

Playin' Reprise - just fine.

Touch - a bit of a let-down, but an understandable call. Decent version.

NFA - SICK. Great jams. Perfect (as the critic said above).

The boys did what they intended to do. The core 4 played GREAT as a quartet with 2 guest musicians that added nice color when they were called upon to do so. Bob was amazing on the ES335 ALL night. The drummers totally drove the whole show. I would LOVE to hear people's impressions after hearing a really good re-mixed SBD version, rather than the sub-par AUD tapes I've been hearing (no offense to the tapers - not the best venue for AUD recording, IMO). That's my .02!

Hey jammasterjustin on my by computer you just right-click each track while it plays and download track-by-track. I just did the whole show. The ABB is great, the Dead good setlist but as mentioned there are some breakdowns. Worth downloading though-thanks Jambase.

Did anyone else see the SKB shirt that Billy is wearing? Just look 3 pic's up on this page. I wonder if this means anything? Is Billy joining Steve Kimock's band? Or is Kimock going to play in a Dead reunion tour next year? Either way, I'm pretty psyched!!! I sure would love to hear Kimock on stage with the boys, ripping it up. Or Billy jamming with Kimock in clubs. Steve was Jerry's favorite guitar player, after all!!

I'm glad they did this show and that folks had fun and maybe some younger ones got a taste of the scene. The review was honest, nothing wrong with that at all. I saw tons of Dead shows back in the day that were amazingly sloppy- as well as some perfect gems that still resonate in my memory.

DeepDiver, I totally agree- the missing man is the one who made all the difference, at least for me personally; and as talented and well-intentioned the various replacements are, and I respect them very much, there was a quality to Jerry that transcended the physics of playing an instrument and singing. May his legend live through the ages.

I'm confused? Why are the dead backing a politician? Is he going to legalize cannabis or something? Is this guy even a deadhead? Would this be going down if Jerry was alive? What exactly is the deads angle on supporting the democrats, the opposite side of the crooked political coin, who last time in power sent more people to jail for cannabis than in the entire history of the drug war. Could you explain this to me? Until then Im voting fot Zappa. Thanks for reuniting.

Interesting comments, thanks posters. Jerry would probably not be into endorsing any candidates,at least not the disconnected Jerry of the 70's, and I do find it odd and disappointing too myself, but being on tour / shows were never all perfect, there was plenty of crazy extremes, dangerous indiscretion and loopy bad decision making. Nothing a little nitrous, some shrooms,a zap or 2 of blow and some kind buds couldn't fix though:) As a 200+ unapologetic former nitrous merchant, singer songwriter dad, I will be crossing party lines to vote for McCain because I think Obama is more of the same- wishy washy, slick lawyer going which ever way the wind blows to get in despite whats right and wrong, sorry, but at least McCain knows it's wrong to kill unborn future musicians, and last time I checked, most socialist countries don't have killer bands, killer grass, just killer dictators and the same old problems they said they'd solve.

oh yeah and to the folks who didn't like the choice of "Touch of Gray" for an encore...are you kidding? That was/is probably one of the most appropriate song choices. How can you not feel enormously uplifted while hearing that tune. Old-schoolers will remember the significance of that song when it came out, being after Jerry's coma and with a lot of folks very concerned for his welfare, hearing the refrain "We will survive!" was very reassuring. There has never been one instance where hearing that song on the radio did not imediately make me smile, whatever my mood was. I know there'a a lot of folks who will agree with me on this.

Yeah, Touch of Gray never gets old. The music at my retail mgt. job sucks for the most part but hearing Touch every day keeps me going. I wish they played more Dead but it sure beats Neil Diamond.

God this looks amazing. Great sets from both bands (legends, really cool to hear Otiel on vocals for the derek and the dominoes cover.

Well, I was there and it was a BEAUTIFUL day. The best part, for me, was walking around and enjoying the wonderful sense of true Deadhead reunion. I saw soooooo many people there who love me and that felt sooooooooo good. My boyfriend bought me a t-shirt for 5 bucks that said something like, "It's not about politics. It's about the music." We bought our tickets from the Obama headquarters and were a British volunteer tried to make us canvass for them but I explained that we, um, WORK. The water in the show was 4 bucks a bottle, but, hey, if Obama wins we'll all be drinking 4 dollar waters, right???????? I thought it was funny when the one Obama supporter emcee announced that Robert Hunter wrote "Franklin's Tower" in 1776. I somehow was not convinced when O. said that even he had a touch of gray that he was a big deadhead. But I definitely was so happy to be among my people and enjoy a truly beautiful day and meet lots of new friends, too.:) Actually, I thought the show was too rehearsed, meaning that it seemed very same old, same old songs and very stiff. and if Bobby and Phil were good old friends, again, it didnt show from my special Obama section seat.

Susan Tedeschi was AWESOME!!!!!! wouldve loved to have heard more! Oh, and was it not freaky when they showed those big kinda scary, wavy-looking Obama heads?

Great show, I can't believe I saw these two legendary groups in the same night. Allmans set was mindblowing, I was surprised to hear them cover Anyday by Derek and the Dominos. The Dead did an awesome Help>Slip!>Tower and Dark Star. The best part was I got to meet Derek Trucks before the show, what a swell guy.
