Grateful Dead Donates Archives To UC Santa Cruz

The Grateful Dead
The Grateful Dead announced today that the band will donate its archives to the University of California, Santa Cruz.

Band members Bob Weir and Mickey Hart made the announcement this morning at a press conference held in the poster room of San Francisco's historic Fillmore auditorium.

Documenting the history of the band from 1965 to the present, The Grateful Dead Archive will reside in the University Library's Special Collections at UC Santa Cruz. The focal point of the collection will be a dedicated room named "Dead Central," where both academic researchers and the general public will have access to the archive.

"The Grateful Dead Archive represents one of the most significant popular cultural collections of the 20th century; UC Santa Cruz is honored to receive this invaluable gift," noted UC Santa Cruz Chancellor George Blumenthal. "The Grateful Dead and UC Santa Cruz are both highly innovative institutions - born the same year - that continue to make a major, positive impact on the world."

The Archive includes business records and correspondence, photographs, and show files with tickets and backstage passes - as well as promotional items such as flyers, posters, shirts, press clips and awards. Framed photos by renowned photographers and unreleased videos of interviews and TV appearances will be available for viewing. Large stage backdrops, stained-glass pieces, and props from live performances are also featured. An extensive collection of Deadhead fan mail and gifts is an important part of the collection.

"We are excited that The Grateful Dead Archive will now have a home at UC Santa Cruz," said Christine Bunting, the head of Special Collections at the University Library. "It will provide extraordinary opportunities for researchers and the public to examine the music of one of the most influential bands in history, as well as explore the cultural phenomenon of Deadheads - the most dedicated and celebrated fans in music. The study of popular culture has become an important focus in the academic disciplines of the arts, humanities and social sciences."

Bunting added that as it works to preserve and prepare the archive for public use, UC Santa Cruz will be forming creative partnerships with Rhino Entertainment (distributor of the band's music and home of the Grateful Dead web site, dead.net), as well as the Rock 'n' Roll Hall of Fame and key high tech companies in the Silicon Valley.

Two foundations established by members of the Grateful Dead previously contributed to UC Santa Cruz in 2004. The Rex Foundation, founded by the Grateful Dead and friends, and the Unbroken Chain Foundation, established by Phil and Jill Lesh, each donated $10,000 to support the campus's archive of maverick composer Lou Harrison. UC Santa Cruz music professor Fred Lieberman helped to facilitate those gifts; Lieberman is co-author of two books with bandmember Mickey Hart - "Planet Drum" and "Drumming at the Edge of Magic."

Bunting noted that due to the monumental size and scope of the archive, a fundraising campaign is now being launched to support it and to endow a permanent Grateful Dead archivist position. She said that she anticipates the archive will be of great interest to thousands of people around the world.

"We looked around, and UC Santa Cruz seems the best possible home," Weir noted. "If you ever wrote the Grateful Dead a letter, you'll probably find it there!"

It says they're announcing a special partnership with UC Santa Cruz.

I don't know what it could possibly be but how dope would it be if they became music teachers there.

I saw that Larrydurango...It was called "From LSD to Peyote" or something like that. They went to some South American nation where little kids as young as 12 were tripping their balls off on Psilocybin too. There was a fascinating show about cocaine right afterwards too.

HoodooVoodoo: Last week, there was GD Night in SF, and John Perry Barlowe, the author of many of the Deads lyrics spoke. Amongst musicians and whatnot, he spoke a lot about LSD and said, "The world would be a lot better of a place if everyone took LSD. Sure there might be a few casualties along the way, but...."

That is pretty exciting! Can't wait to see what sort of news comes from this. Probably a big new release or something previously un-discovered?

Maybe there doing a course on the Grateful Dead like the University of Massachusetts is doing currently. "How Does the Song Go? The Grateful Dead as a Window into American Culture," which was launched this past fall. Believed to be the only college course in the country dedicated to the Dead, the class analyzes the popular band, the avatar of hippie counterculture, and its famously loyal fans as a springboard to a deeper look at American society and politics during the group's 30-year run.

The class, a similarly themed graduate seminar, and a first-of-its kind symposium on the band next month at UMass have vaulted the school to the forefront of Grateful Dead study, placing Amherst, not Haight-Ashbury, at the center of the group's hazy, happy universe. Heading up the effort: a former professor who was the group's longtime publicist, and a historian, Robert Weir, who serendipitously shares his name with the Dead's former rhythm guitarist.

Former UCSC Slug Here.

Exactly 10 years ago I took a class called History of the Grateful Dead at UCSC that was taught by Fred Lieberman. He was the author of the Mickey Hart Book "Drumming at the Edge of Magic" and he had Dennis McNally, John Barlow, Mickey, and Zakir Hussein all come into the class. IT WAS THE MOST HILARIOUS CLASS I HAVE EVER TAKEN. Only at Santa Cruz!

God I miss that place

According to Yahoo the band is donating their non-audio archives to UCSC. That's pretty much everything they saved that's not music...makes me want to go to UCSC for a masters in something music related!

A GD movie with Jack Black as Jerry Garcia? No way! Robin Williams should play him. Or John Goodman

UC Santa Cruz is taking over the archives of the dead... including the warehouse that they currently have, full of artifacts from throughout the Dead's history... that's what the press conference is about.

UCSC is a great place for this. I also took the Grateful Dead class and had a blast! It's really nice to be an alumni of a great place like UC Santa Cruz. Anyone else hear about the Chancelor closing down campus for 4/20 because of the huge gatherings there? Last year was over 5000 and due to the closing of campus this year was only about 2000 in the circle of elders (Porter Meadow) but still pretty good for a complete shut down of campus with no guests alowed.

i think they should get Santa Claus to play Jerry, keanu reeves could play bob, billy could be played by bill murray, mickey - leonard nemoy, and phil could play himself (he gets younger every time i see him).

Rob - Looks like they are keeping aud/vid. That is what they can make money off of. All this stuff they were probably paying $100k a year on storage for and got sick of it. Not being critical, but that is the biz. That is the way that the company is now run. This will cost a butt load to store and maintain.

Also, I doubt it includes the instruments. Remember how they (Bobby) sued Doug Irwin for Jerry's guitars because he (Bobby) claimed that they belonged to the band? All despite the fact that Jerry paid for the guitars (and not he band) and willed them to Doug (if you can call that a will). Classy!

Bobby = scum. That's why Phil was not there. Makes you wonder why MH showed up. THat is probably why the band will not tour again. I reckon they have had enough with Bob's nick lunges, tight cut offs and yelps.

kirkbrew, you make some excellent points. I forgot about the Irwin snafu; why on earth would Bobby not want those guitars to go to their maker as Jerry wished. The bad PR is worse than the $$ they would have gained, one would think. UCSC is a good choice- surprised it was not in Marin or Berkley. I lived in SC for many years, saw some great shows at UC. I think I wrote a letter to the Dead in '76 OR '77. Would be cool to spend a day tooling around the archives, bet there is some wicked cool stuff in there, maybe some goodies...

DBang starstarstarstarstar Fri 4/25/2008 07:33PM
0 Votes Thumbs down! Thumbs up!

i think the reason that bobby didn't want irwin to have those guitars back is that he (irwin) was just going to put them on ebay and auction them off to the highest bidder. bobby thought they should be preserved as part of the band's history. i have to say i agree, but i'm sure jerry wouldn't have cared either way.

ps i nominate myself for the full time 'dead archivist' position. i may not be totally qualified, but that sounds like a dream job to me.
