Stormy Mondays | Robert Walter’s 20th Congress Live Mix

I think one of the most immediately identifiable and engaging traits of Robert Walter’s playing is how utterly bright it is. His drenched organ sounds can spread across the foreground or background of a given song or passage, but they always end up bubbling at the surface: shiny and smile-inducing.

This week we’re listening back to a mix of material from Robert Walter’s 20th Congress, largely taken from 2003 and 2004. We open with “Ain’t It Funky” followed a super nice version of “Freshman 10” featuring some superb work by Joe Russo. Next is “Nautilus,” a cover that made its way into both Walter’s and STS9’s repertoire during the same period, followed by a long “Quantico VA” > “Aquafresh” from High Sierra. To close everything out, we have a hot cover of one of my all-time favorite groove staples, “Fire Eater” by Rusty Bryant. As always, enjoy!
