In the summer of 1982 Frank Zappa embarked on a tour of Europe that ended with a two-week swing through Italy. Zappa’s last performance on that tour took place in Palermo on Sicily, the region of the country where Frank’s family lived before moving to America. A new documentary that has been in the works for years profiles Zappa’s trip to Sicily from two different perspectives -that of filmmaker Salvo Cuccia who attended the concert with his father and that of Frank’s children Dweezil and Diva Zappa.

Zappa’s show in Palermo ended with a riot and Frank was so upset by the way that show and tour went down at the time he said it would be his last tour of Europe. In the new 80-minute documentary Cuccia discusses the situation in Italy that summer and profiles Frank’s trip to his homeland with the help of Massimo Bassoli, great friend and biographer of the musician.

The film recently made its debut at the Venice International Film Festival and will soon make its way to this side of the Atlantic. While we wait, a most interesting 10-minute trailer of the documentary has been posted. Watch as Dweezil and Diva investigate their father’s roots:
