Zac Brown frontman Zac Brown Band has long been a fan of Jimmy Buffett and the pair have a relationship that dates back to 2010, when Buffett and the ZBB collaborated on an episode of CMT’s Crossroads. “A Pirate Looks At Forty” is one of Zac Brown’s favorite Jimmy Buffett songs and Zac performs a solo acoustic cover of the tune while sitting beside the ocean in a new video posted to his group’s YouTube channel.
Jimmy Buffett penned “A Pirate Looks At Forty” as a tribute to Phillip Clark. “He was one of the most unforgettable characters I met when I first lived in Key West, back in the days before it turned into a boutique. When I finished the song, I knew I had done him justice, and it is a fitting eulogy to an old friend,” Buffett explained in a note posted on his website. “He died a few years ago under an alias, washed up on a beach near San Francisco. They flew his body back to Key West where some of his ashes were scattered at sea, and some still sit above the cash register in the Full Saloon.”
The original version appears on Buffett’s 1974 album, A1A. Zac Brown Band and Jimmy Buffett performed “A Pirate Looks At Forty” together on Crossroads. In the new video, Zac Brown sings a solemn rendition accompanied by his acoustic guitar as the waves crash in.
