Zac Brown Band rolled through Milwaukee last Friday for a performance at the city’s Summerfest event. Brown welcomed opener Marcus King to sing and shred on a cover of The Allman Brothers Band classic, “Whipping Post,” toward the end of the main set.
Zac Brown and company opened the concert with the favorite “Homegrown,” off Jekyll & Hyde, one of four songs the band played from the 2012 LP. Brown would dip evenly from that album along with 2010’s You Get What You Give — “As She’s Walking Away,” “Whiskey’s Gone” and more — along with 2012’s Uncaged including “Jump Right In” and “Sweet Annie” among others.

Zac Brown also delivered a bevy of choice covers including Queen’s “Bohemian Rhapsody,” Beastie Boys “Sabotage,” The Rolling Stones’ “Paint It Black” and more. ZBB welcomed singer-songwriter and producer Breland for a mashup of the You Get What You Give cut “Keep Me In Mind” and the Stevie Wonder Classic “Superstition.” Watch a highlight video from the collab:
After Uncaged’s “Goodbye In Her Eyes,” Zac Brown Band welcomed Marcus King for “Whipping Post.” Marcus has been acting as support for select shows on ZBB’s 2023 From The Fire North American Tour. Brown and King also teamed up for the single, “Stubborn Love,” in 2021 and Marcus joined ZBB to add guitar to “Out In The Middle” at the 2022 CMA Awards.
For King and the Atlanta-based Zac Brown Band’s “Whipping Post” collaboration in Milwaukee, ZBB’s Clay Cook handled the first verse and chorus as well as Gregg Allman’s Hammond organ lines. Following a well-built, explosive solo from Brown, Marcus helmed the second verse and delivered a typically outstanding vocal performance before tearing into the ABB classic himself showcasing some dazzling work high up on the neck ahead of the song’s epic conclusion.
