The Zac Brown Band began their extensive Down The Rabbit Hole Tour on Friday night at the Pinnacle Bank Arena in Lincoln, Nebraska. Opening night found the nine-piece band mixing well-worn originals with a heaping helping of new covers thrown in at various points of the night. “I think we’ve got 15 new songs we got ready for this show we’ve never played before,” Zac reportedly told the crowd. “You’re going to get a taste of our background and influences. This is kind of a new concept for us.” The frontman actually understated the number of cover debuts the band would go on the play. Friday’s encore alone featured 10 new covers.

Brown & Co.’s first set contained 10 career-spanning originals including “Keep Me In Mind,” “Sweet Annie” and “Knee Deep” along with three cover debuts. The Zac Brown Band unveiled renditions of Imagine Dragons’ “Next To Me,” Alice Merton’s “No Roots” and Hozier’s “Take Me To Church” within the frame. ZBB also fit Van Morrison’s “Into The Mystic” within their own “Free” as they’ve done many times in the past.

After intermission, the group kicked off the second set with a debut cover of Billy Joel’s “The Longest Time” ahead of the beloved “Colder Weather.” Opening act the Mark O’Connor Band joined in soon thereafter for the bulk of the closing stanza including the group’s first-ever covers of “Eleanor Rigby” and “With A Little Help From My Friends” by the Beatles. The Zac Brown Band and their guests also treated fans to a take on the original “My Old Man” that was combined as a medley with Mike + The Mechanics’ “The Living Years” and Dan Fogelberg’s “Leader Of The Band.” For the encore, the ZBB ran through portions of 10 crowd-pleasing covers they had never played before. Individual band members took turns leading the group through such songs as Living Colour’s “Cult Of Personality,” “Paint It Black” by The Rolling Stones, Elton John’s “Bennie & The Jets,” “Tush” by ZZ Top, Alice In Chains’ “Man In The Box,” AC/DC’s “Thunderstruck” and “Sabotage” by the Beastie Boys.
