Last night, Yo La Tengo began a three-show New Year’s Eve run at The Fillmore in San Francisco featuring support from Luna. The two bands joined forces for a collaborative, cover-filled encore to end the Sunday night concert.
Yo La Tengo, who recently concluded their annual Hanukkah residency at New York City’s Bowery Ballroom, kicked off their 15-song main set with “This Stupid World.” The performance of the title track from the trio’s most recent album was followed by more originals from throughout their career, including fellow This Stupid World cuts “Apology Letter” and “Aselestine” as well as staples “Barnaby, Hardly Working,” “Nowhere Near,” “We’re An American Band” and “Tom Courtenay.”
Luna co-founder Dean Wareham took the stage with Yo La Tengo for the cover of Neil Young’s recently released single, “Big Crime,” that opened the encore. Neil Young & The Chrome Hearts unveiled the politically-charged “Big Crime” at an August concert in Chicago. Yo La Tengo premiered their rendition as the opening song of their Hanukkah residency.
The rest of Luna joined Wareham and Yo La Tengo for the Ohio Express number “Yummy, Yummy, Yummy.” Luna stuck around to contribute to the show-closing cover of The Cure’s “Friday I’m In Love.” The latter hadn’t been performed by Yo La Tengo since April and marked the only song performed by the trio on Sunday at The Fillmore that they didn’t play during the Hanukkah run.
