Norah Jones Covers Bob Dylan & Randy Newman With Yo La Tengo At Hanukkah Show

Singer-songwriter Norah Jones was Yo La Tengo’s special guest at their concert last night at The Bowery Ballroom in New York City. Jones joined the trio on night five of this year’s Hanukkah run for covers of songs written by Randy Newman and Bob Dylan.

This Is Lorelei and comedians Clare O’Kane and Patti Harrison were the evening’s openers. The holiday show benefited Just Making A Change For Families.

Yo La Tengo – guitarist Ira Kaplan, drummer Georgia Hubley and bassist James McNew – began night five of the eight-show residency with the quiet “Big Day Coming” arrangement. The fast version of “Big Day Coming” came up later in the show.

Wilco’s “If I Ever Was a Child,” written by Jeff Tweedy, was played during YLT’s main set. The setlist also included a cover of “Gee, The Moon Is Shining Bright” by The Dixie Cups.

Jones participated in the encore, playing keyboard and adding vocals to another Dixie Cups song, “I’m Gonna Get You.” The guest spot continued with Randy Newman’s “I Think It’s Going to Rain Today.”

Two of Jones’ own songs, “Carry On” and “Little Broken Hearts,” were played around Yo La Tengo’s “Tears Are In Your Eyes.” The concert and collaboration concluded with Bob Dylan’s “I’ll Be Your Baby Tonight.”
