Show six of Yo La Tengo’s eight-night Hanukkah run was held Tuesday at The Bowery Ballroom in New York City and Beach House was the surprise opening act. The concert ended with a four-song encore consisting of The Velvet Underground covers, including “Pale Blue Eyes” with Beach House’s Victoria Legrand on vocals.

Comedian Todd Barry also performed an opening set and returned at the start of the encore to play drums on The Velvet Underground rarity “We’re Gonna Have A Real Good Time Together.” Berry left and next came “She’s My Best Friend,” another VU rarity that was later released by Lou Reed on his 1976 solo album Coney Island Baby. A third cover, “I Heard Her Call My Name” from The Velvet Underground’s 1968 sophomore album, White Light/White Heat, set up the previously mentioned “Pale Blue Eyes” with Legrand.

Before the encore, Yo La Tengo began their main set augmented by Joe McGinty on keyboards and Danny Tunick on vibraphone. YLT opened with staple “Our Way To Fall” and followed with fellow favorites “Flying Lesson (Hot Chicken #1),” “Tears Are In Your Eyes” and “Is That Enough.”

Tunick sat out a cover of “Coffee House” by The Poets, and returned for YLT originals “If It’s True,” “Did I Tell You” and Tuesday’s only song off their 2023 album This Stupid World, “Aselestine.” A pair of Gary Lewis & the Playboys covers, “Count Me In” and “Everybody Loves A Clown,” ended McGinty and Tunick’s initial time onstage.

The rest of the set was filled in with more YLT originals, “Here To Fall,” “Cherry Chapstick,” “The Story of Jazz” and “Sugarcube.” McGinty came back for the set closer, a cover of “Little Honda,” The Beach Boys song popularized by The Hondells.
